18” X 18” watercolor paper

watercolor paper is a comfort zone

18” X 18”

First time working on it in a square though.

Paper is easy. If it doesn’t come out right, it is so easy to rumple it up and throw it away.

Conclusion: Even though it felt like this piece was going somewhere, I couldn’t get past the dislike of doing the acrylics on paper. Strongly dislike the feel of it all, and would much prefer to be able to sand back.

Layer 7. The black broom had to go. It was getting all the attention.

Lots of warm orange tones now, but feeling that I need to add back in more blues and greens.

Layer 6. I am a scavenger on our morning walk. I find something of interest and it often goes in a pocket

Our walk on this morning was wet, but I found this interesting piece of material, probably part of someone’s umbrella. I decided to replicate the look of this found treasure on layer six of this piece on watercolor paper. Cut out a template of the shape and then used a Faber Castel Gelato, a block graphite stick and some fluid Burnt Sienna to replicate the shape and look.

Layers 4 & 5. Kind of went a little crazy with this one. This is a hazard/freedom thing for me when I work on a piece after supper.

I had added Layer 4 - Manganese Blue Satin Glazing Liquid earlier in the day. But then after supper, and before yoga I needed something to do, this became the victim.

Layer 5.
Added Burnt Sienna Heavy Body acrylic and Carbon Black fluid acrylic, spread it around with a color shaper.

Wasn’t sure I liked anything after I was done, but that is the beauty of making myself photograph each layer before moving on. In the morning when I looked at I saw a lot of possibilities.

Layer 3. A new day. A new Beginner’s Mind.

Since I loved the fluid acrylics mixed with the Satin Glazing Liquid from the day before; I decided to try Gloss Medium mixed with the fluid acrylics.

Mostly used the gloss medium and Burnt Sienna. That mixed well, and again spread quite lovely.

At the end I added some Manganese Blue to the Burnt Sienna and poured some lines on to the piece. I like the lines and randomness. Remains to see how this fair later on.

Not sure I like the glossy sheen.

Layer 2. Graphite Mark Making. I used a variety of graphite mark making tools. My mark making tends to be words gathered from books or the world around me. This one could probably use a few more thin lines.

Layer 1. It is all about collage. Even though I like randomness, I really prefer for my collage to be straight on the substrate, so that one crooked piece is bothering me. Good thing this is only the first layer. This one has a brownie recipe in my grandmother’s handwriting. I hope I don’t regret using it.
